Animal Agriculture

Animal agriculture is responsible for bringing over 70 billion land animals into existence each year – the vast majority of these will have awful lives. If antinatalists care to avoid bringing human beings into existence due to the inevitability of suffering, then, we believe, the same applies to avoiding bringing animals into existence as well. Indeed, the animals bred in our agricultural system often have much worse lives than humans.

Transitioning away from supporting the industries that bring animals into existence, both in our personal lives (through lifestyle change, such as becoming vegan) and in the initiatives we support with our time and resources, we believe, would be a good thing for antinatalists to do. Lobbying government, corporate practices and laws, as well as developing alternative food sources, are just some of the ways that change can be brought about. There are established charities already working on these issues which antinatalists can support to continue their work. We have included a list of some of them below that have been identified by an independent charity evaluator to be effective.

  • The Humane League

Engages in vegan advocacy and corporate outreach to improve farmed animal welfare standards.

  • Fish Welfare

Researches and implements welfare improvements for farmed fishes in countries where the largest numbers of fishes are farmed.

  • Animal Charity Evaluators

Use evidence and reason to determine which animal charities have the largest impact.

  • Animal Advocacy Careers

Support people into high-impact careers to help animals.
